Step by step
This is the part that matters. An advertiser buys a town, not a traffic number — the hardware store two streets away will pay to reach the people on its streets, and it cannot do that anywhere else.
Takes about three minutes. You will be asked for the site, what it is about, the town, and roughly how many people read it. An honest small number is fine. This network exists for small sites.
Somebody actually opens it. If it is accepted you get a
publisher key — it looks like pub-a1b2c3d4 — and that
key is how you get into your desk.
There is a one-time ten dollar fee at this point, or you can carry one of our own advertisements free for six months instead and pay nothing. It is not refundable and it does not come off what you earn. Nothing is charged before this and you can walk away here.
On WordPress: install the plugin, go to Settings then AdHotBox,
paste your key. Then drop the AdHotBox block, the widget, or the shortcode
[adhotbox size="card"] wherever you want an advertisement.

Sizes are rail 300×600, card 300×250, inline 728×180, leader 970×120. Put as many or as few on a page as you like.
You can do this before you are accepted. One of our own advertisements appears, marked Demonstration, so you can see it working straight away.
Every advertiser appears on your desk before it can run. You see the business, what the advertisement says, and where it goes. Accept or deny, one click each.
Nothing appears on your pages that you have not agreed to. You can also switch off whole categories and never see them, or switch on accept-everything if you would rather not review them at all.
A placement is twenty dollars a month and five of that is yours, every month it runs, whatever your traffic does. Ten placements is fifty dollars a month.
Some pay a great deal more. A video is $12.50 to you, and a political advertisement is $27.50 — that one is the category most sites refuse, and the one that takes it is paid for the trouble. You decide each one.
What you have earned is on your desk. There is no minimum before you are paid anything.
The honest part, before you spend any time on this.
This network is new and the demand side is small. Mediavine and Raptive arrive with advertisers already signed; we arrive with the ones we have sold and our own. A site joining now will not see much at first.
There is no exclusivity here precisely so that you do not have to bet anything on us. Install it beside whatever you already run. If it earns, keep it.
